The 225-horsepower Pro Max 225 outboard engine is equipped with SmartCraft technology.

Pumping out 225 horsepower, the Pro Max 225 is the latest outboard offering from Mercury racing. It features a 2.5-litre, V-6 block with the PCM 555 SmartCraftTM CAN electronic control system.

Among the outboard's internal construction features are high-performance cylinder liners with race-derived transfer ports for increased torque and knock resistance. In addition, the cylinder block exhaust chest is machined for optimal exhaust flow and power. The modified exhaust adapter plate and center section reduce engine back pressure and noise.

Using the same casting as the 2.5 EFI Drag race heads, the new 225X O-ring race-style cylinder heads minimize cylinder bore distortion. Enlarged water chambers provide increased
water flow close to the combustion chambers and spark plugs, reportedly lowering engine temperature for enhanced reliability and durability.

Additional highlights include single-point oil injection, enhanced crankshaft sealing, steel-cage rod bearings and more durable piston rings.

All Pro Max 225X models are equipped with a digital SmartCraft Controller Area Network (CAN) electronic control system. The CAN electronic control computer processor optimizes fuel, spark timing and knock control for each cylinder independently, enhancing engine running quality and performance.

The processor also operates the electronic single-point lubrication system. The Engine Guardian System monitors more than 40 engine functions for potential problems. The CAN computer processor also drives SmartCraft System Monitor and accessory System Gauges. The SC1000 System Monitor and accessory System Tachometer calculate fuel flow and range. Additionally, both drive optional single-function analog style System Link gauges.
